Truly destructive and inaccurate book misrepresenting Feminism and the advancement of equal rights.
Insightful if only to view the perspective of someone who deeply misunderstands Feminism and believes it is leading to the "disintegration of the family."

Interesting how people either love or hate this book, which speaks well of it, in my opinion. I thought it was brilliant, explaining our current situation in ways that truly shed light on it in ways I had never heard elsewhere or thought about before. A must-read for anybody who is open minded and interested in understanding what is behind some of the lack of satisfaction in our current society and considering what can or should be done about it.
This 'book' (actually a pamphlet) is no better than a glorified undergraduate term paper with no insights and no real scholarly thought self-published with a fancy title. I am embarrassed that I spent money on this
Excellent and interesting short book and this is coming from someone who regularly reads on these issues. I appreciated that the writing was very succinct and there wasn't a lot of 'fluff'. Modern feminism wasn't just contrasted with the previous waves of feminism but also with the decades and centuries prior that shaped the course of feminism's history. Granted, if you're not on the more conservative end of the political spectrum you may well bristle at some of the points in the book, but keep in mind the aim of the book should be obvious enough by the title.
Why, after a hundred years of feminism, are things seemingly getting worse for women?
Why does the liberated modern party girl feel so ashamed and still go back for more? Why do women work 60-hour weeks and end up having to go home and feed the kids and clean the house as well? Why do women still get paid less than men when doing the same job?
These are the essential mysteries that this short book solves. They are not, as some critics might suggest, the remnants of a patriarchy that feminists have for more than a century fought. The seeds of the modern woman’s discontent lie in feminism itself. This is a controversial statement, to be sure, but it is backed up by the history.
In this short book or long essay, Morse lays out an elegant theory as to how we go into this mess. He begins by showing how men and women are different and how those differences led naturally to what he calls a ‘Sexual Division of Labor’ where women handled domestic tasks and men handled external tasks. Rather than lead to an imbalance of power as modern feminists claim, this fostered a balance of power where men and women were equally valued in society. Morse shows how this Sexual Balance of Power played out through hunter-gatherer and agrarian societies.
Then came Industrialism. With the advent of industrial power, the external role--held by males--exploded in power, leaving women behind with the family. It is then that we see the first real push for feminism and to include women in the workforce. Of course, in order to bring them into the workforce, they disrupted the balance of power and society as a whole.
These days, feminism is making a comeback. The thought is that the patriarchy is to blame and all we need to do is smash the patriarchy. But this book shows how it’s more complex than that. And to solve the problems facing women and society today, we need a fuller approach that reestablished the balance of power.
As a woman who has experienced it, I thoroughly recommend this essay for anyone who is interested in the dynamics of sex and society.
